Why start a junk hauling business?
Low startup costs.
Junk hauling is one of
the least expensive businesses to start up. You
only need a strong body. That's right--you don't
even need the truck--you can simply rent one for $20.
Profitability.
Junk is a nuisance, and customers pay well to have it
taken away. Usually they pay in cash.
Rising demand.
Americans are consuming
more than ever and replacing electronics, computers, and
appliances at a faster rate than ever. It's
cheaper to simply dispose of appliances than to repair
them, so the need for moving bulky items is growing.
Also, Americans are getting older--this large group of
people cannot haul their own junk.
Part time hours.
You don't have to keep
shop hours. Work weekends if you want--that's when
the most requests come in. Work part time or full
time...whatever fits your schedule.
Bonuses!
You would be appalled at
what some people throw away! Large televisions,
nearly new leather couches, and working computers.
They're yours to keep.
Minimal advertising
costs. You don't
have to have an expensive Yellow Pages ad, radio
advertising, or a sign on a busy road. Simply
advertise on Craigslist, make a simple website, and hand
out flyers. The customers will find you!
How to get started?
First, get a general business license from your county. Open a
checking account at your bank. Now go about getting customers.
Contact construction companies--they need junk haulers frequently.
Get to know realtors--they know people moving in and out of homes who
need junk removal. Advertise on Craigslist. Craigslist is
currently the most plentiful resource for getting junk hauling
customers. Print up some flyers and hand them out in upper class
neighborhoods or neighborhoods with a large concentration of elderly.
With some effort, you WILL get calls. To start, you will want to
underprice your competitors by at least 20%. Call them to find out
their prices. Perform as many hauling jobs as possible initially
to build your referral base. Leave business cards and flyers with
your customers and their neighbors. If you show up on time and
work quickly and politely, you WILL get referred to your customers'
friends and family.
What are the laws?
There are 5 items you CANNOT haul:
Asbestos.
Chemicals, Solvents,
and Oils.
Paint.
Oil drums and oil
tanks.
Car batteries.
Your local landfill may
have additional items that they will not accept. Check with them
for their current rules.
You do not HAVE to carry
insurance, but if your hauling business grows and becomes a serious
venture, you will want to invest in liability insurance--it is
relatively inexpensive.
What will I be hauling?
What will I charge? How do I minimize my landfill costs? How
do I create an effective Craigslsit Ad? How do I get repeat
business? How do I get my customers to post online reviews?
